E
lectric Power for older R/C models
In my experience because of micro radios, micro servos and high tech motors and batteries
older models will weight the same with E power as the did with wet power 30 or more years ago. Little if any airframe modification
is needed based on my experience with 15 or more older R/C designs [
Since many of the smaller
models were for Cox power the kits will come with a flat firewall. A simple mount can be made by wrapping the motor in masking
tape and forming a tube of 2/3 layers of 1/64 plywood. Cut a hole in the firewall
to match the tube and epoxy in place. Shim the inside of the tube with a few
small strips of balsa to get a tight fit and epoxy the fire wall into the fuselage
positioning it so the length of the fuselage is the same as shown on the plans.
If this
seems like too much work just drill a balsa block to match your motor and epoxy to the firewall. With this method you can
sand the block to a stream line shape which is easier than fairing in a motor tube.
Either of
these methods will work for direct or gear drives but I find my small models do well with direct drive power.
